Big Dogs in Bradford

Two days ago, while pedaling near my home, I was delighted to discover the Bradford Common filled with 20 larger-than-life metal dog sculptures. The “American Dog” sculptures are part of a traveling exhibit, The Big Dog Show, by local sculptor Dale Rogers. In fact, the collection of 8 ft. high, 10 ft. wide pieces amounts to New England’s largest solo sculpture exhibit.

“Adding sculpture to public landscapes can inspire people of all ages. I want my art to invoke a thought, generate conversation and create a strong connection for people who view it,” Rogers says. “Historically dogs have made positive and lasting impressions with people, I hope the American Dog sculptures and The Big Dog Show will do the same.”

Rogers’ sculptures have certainly made an impression on me, lifting my spirit from the first moment I saw them this week and each time thereafter. Having long enjoyed the artist’s large dog sculpture that sits adjacent to the highway exit nearest our home, I’m also delighted for this opportunity to finally learn more about the artist behind that landmark.

Bradford is the first stop on this exhibit as it travels through New England. This exhibition is currently scheduled to be on display for one week each in the Massachusetts cities of Haverhill, Beverly, Lowell, and Newburyport; Portsmouth, NH and Ogunquit, ME during August and September 2009.
